a strange one this. not my usual read – i felt ambivalent as i was reading it, but it remained with me, which is the sign of a good book! As far as location goes, it isn’t great for conjuring up Japan, but does mention the odd Japanese thing, like kon’nyaku (a jelly like substance, very healthy apparently, made from the kon’nyaku potato. this novel was shortlisted for the 2011 Man Asian Literary Prize.
