As born Istrian, I was very excited about the fact that a famous film producer writes a novel about my homeland being at the same time aware of the complexity of the matter he is dealing with. Nevertheless, Mike drew me into the story from page one and didn’t let me get out, which is a fascinating skill in a story that spans over pivotal historical moments in Istria’s rich heritage. Skillfully handling genres and dramatic structure, Downey drives wildly in his debut novel; Unpredictable, complex, layered, and indescribably imaginative, that’s Mike Downey as a writer! I read in one of his interviews that he is preparing the Istrian Trilogy! I eagerly await new books and hope that he will still find a place for an impressive film career!
