Historical crime novel set in County WEXFORD
Slovenia – a land of natural & cultural diversity
9th April 2020
Slovenia is a brilliant country – with, incidentally, an exciting literary tradition. No one is going to be travelling in the coming weeks, but there is no harm in dreaming and planning. We asked our friends at Slovenia Holidays to write a post tempting us to visit their homeland when we are through the current crisis. Here it is…
‘Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but when it comes to natural splendour, Slovenia is huge. Not to mention how incredibly diverse it is. Travelling around this place will allow you to experience a number of geographical regions and microclimates in one short journey.
Almost 60% of Slovenia is covered in forests, making it one of the greenest countries on the planet. These are cut into by breath-taking valleys, broad farmlands, spacious plateaus and majestic mountains.
If you’re visiting Slovenia, you simply have to dedicate some of your time there to outdoor activities. The countryside offers sports enthusiasts of all sorts to have the time of their lives. From kids to adrenaline junkies, everyone can find something worth overdoing.
Wintertime transforms the mountains into a skiing paradise, while in summer, the whole country is a hive of activities. Slovenia’s pristine rivers are perfect for white-water rafting and kayaking, while the mountains are swarmed with hikers.

Despite being a modern country, Slovenia is steeped in history. From prehistoric artefacts, Roman ruins, to medieval castles and ancient churches. Legends, customs, traditions, scientific advances, artistic exploits – Slovenia has an immensely rich cultural heritage to explore and learn about.
As far as food and drink go, Slovenia is super tasty place. Yes, the way to a country’s culture is definitely through the stomach. Slovenia’s culinary tradition spans centuries and comes in the most colourful varieties. Wine is the national drink and winemaking is the national hobby. The best places to try the local grub and the booze are tourist farms, so make sure to stop off at one of those when in the neighbourhood.
The richness of Slovenian culture is reflected most profoundly in its people. Roughly 2 million inhabitants live on the ‘sunny side of the Alps’, and thanks to its above mentioned affluent history, they’re as diverse as the land they call home. Friendly and famous for their hospitality, Slovenian’s will welcome you with open arms.
Now all you have to do is come over for a nice, relaxing holiday to Slovenia and see for yourself. But be warned, you’re likely to leave with a strong desire to return!’ And catch them on FACEBOOK!
Thank you to Slovenia Holidays for this piece extolling the virtues of their beautiful country. We now certainly want to visit just as soon as we are able!
