Thriller set on fictional Aegos in the AEGEAN SEA, Greece

Six women – ‘hens’ – descend on the fictional island of Aegos in the Aegean Sea to celebrate Lexi’s upcoming marriage to Ed. I often balk at this number of protagonists brought together in the early stages of a novel, I fear I might not get hold of their individual personalities and they might blur, but the author gradually lays full foundations for her characters and they do all stick in the mind and feel individual.

They are staying in a villa which has been loaned to them, and of course as they mix and spend time together, it is clear there will be some tensions but perhaps some fun over the holiday. It is tricky when a person’s friendship groups are thrown together because it is not a given that everyone will necessarily get on. Lexi has invited her older friends, and a yoga teacher, whom she has recently met and Ed’s sister has joined them too.

Whilst the reader is getting to know the women, the storyline feels perhaps a little slow but once the group is established, it starts to bowl along nicely. Of course there are secrets and histories that infiltrate the proceedings and there is a voice that indicates that things will not end well. But who is going to succumb, and just what will happen?

Tension is kept taut and the author tells her story in a clear and enticing way. The backdrop of Greece, and the villa teetering on the edge of the cliff adds a frisson of heat and fear as the women bond and spend time together. Perhaps not a novel to read if you are going on a hen weekend but ok, good to read if you are heading for Greece as it will get you in the mood for some retsina, dolmades and greek salad!
