Thrilling novel set mainly around LONDON

8th October 2026

Thrilling novel set mainly around LONDONZero Kill by M K Hill, a thrilling noel set mainly around LONDON.

#fromourbookshelves

The novel opens in a restaurant, where Elsa and Joel are having dinner on a date night. Within the first couple of pages, it is clear that she is a slightly irascible kind of person, keen to keep control. She has the finely honed body of an elite athlete and will only succumb to one small glass of wine. Strange, then, that she has come out without her phone. And then her evening takes several sharp and dangerous turns and this all happens within the space of a few pages. To say it is a cracking opener to a book is an understatement.

Elsa Zero is in fact wanted by every intelligence agency around the world. Only, Elsa has no idea why.

“She’d spent much of her life doing the bidding of invisible masters, turning a blind eye to the motives of whatever side RedQueen was working for, and this was where she’d ended up…everyone wanter her dead.”

Nine years ago she was on a mission to South America and the storyline casts back every now and then to events that took place then. She also happened to find herself in the early stages of pregnancy and eventually gave birth to twins, who are now being housed by her estranged parents, to keep them – hopefully – out of harm’s way.

From gunfire and murder in Cavendish Square to a life threatening run along the rails of the underground, pursued by a tube train, this novel is real high-octane storytelling. There is use of AI, some Russian involvement, a biolab and a car plunge into the icy waters of the Thames at Putney.

Elsa is a kickass operative, who had hoped to disappear into oblivion, but still needs to rely on her carefully acquired skills. The plot is very busy but it is easy to follow and full of action and intrigue, with a nod to the capers featured in Mr and Mrs Smith and Killing Eve.

I find the word play around the title a little confusing. It’s a great cover and from the layout, I would have imagined the title should be “Kill Zero” (reading, as one does normally, from left to right) but the title apparently is “Zero Kill”. I get it’s a play on words but I feel it’s missed the mark and even now – thinking back – I can’t remember which is the correct version.
