In 1920s Madras, Superintendent Chris Le Fanu of the Indian Police Service is a square peg in a round hole. His colleagues resist the rise of Indian nationalism and resent concessions made to India. But Le Fanu served with Indian troops during World War One and respects them, that respect enhanced by the quality of his assistant, Muhammad Habibullah.
A visiting Englishwoman is murdered following a party at the home of a senior British official, and Le Fanu and Habi antagonise several local notables in uncovering a drug ring.
Le Fanu’s personal life provides further irritation to the conservative European community, and all this is against the backdrop of exotic Madras.
