Superintendent Chris Le Fanu returns from the Straits Settlements to find his Madras Indian Police Service colleagues struggling with an outbreak of Hindu-Muslim tension. This particularly affects his assistant, Muhammad Habibullah, who feels that Muslim interests are being ignored.
Personally, Le Fanu has come back to resign so that he can return to the Straits Settlements to be with his new love, Jenlin Koh, and is distracted by that as well as by dealing with the illness of his former lover, Roisin McPhedren.
All the while the communal clashes rise, and Le Fanu struggles to balance his professional and personal ambitions and aspirations, even though he loves being back in the exotic city of Madras.
