Dutiful Daughters
Location(s): Caserta, London
Genre(s): Fiction, In Translation
Era(s): Contemporary
Summoned home from her London life of Tinder dates and teaching rich housewives Italian, rebellious expatriate Clara returns to the stifling provincial world of Caserta, near Naples.
Her perfect first cousin, Rossella, is marrying the ideal man: Luca, a lawyer.
Clara can’t possibly mention her own freestyle arrangement with the uncommitted Tomás.
Conscripted into the hen party, dealing with posturing parents and nosy family, Clara relives their shared girlhood. She comments with ironic acuity on past and present alike.
But in bourgeois Caserta, nothing is quite what it pretends or wants to be – not even dutiful Rossella.
