The book is set in the last decades of the nineteenth century and, part autobiographical, it is about a young orphan, his apprenticeship in art, then medicine as well as the theme of love. Philip is raised in an English country vicarage, then he moves on to Heidelberg, then Paris among a community of apriing artist. He then returns to London which is full of the high life and sordidness and becomes involved in a love affair that becomes his compusion.
