Sarah Woodruff is the woman of the title, the French Lieutenant’s Woman, also known as the “Tragedy”. She lives in the coastal town of Lyme Regis, as a disgraced woman, supposedly abandoned by a French naval officer named Varguennes, who was married, unknown to her, to another woman. Sarah is reputed ot have an affair with him before he returned to France. Charles Smithson develops a strong curiostiy for her, they build up a rapport and he supports her move to Exeter. Having, eventually made love, he realises that, in fact, she is still a virgin…..
