The Villa Triste functions as the Gestapo HQ in Florence 1940s. The central characters are 2 sisters, Isabella and Caterina. With the armistice everything changes. Both sisters become have become involved with the Partisans and it is something that happens during this time that leads to the present day events.

Fast forward to 2006 an old man is found shot through the back of the head. Pallioti starts the investigation and starts to make links with Partisan activity.
