Words cannot express how very much I fell in love with this book (Amazon reviewer)

Winner of the NZ Booklovers Award 2021 for Best Adult Fiction

Greta’s ears started to pop. She swallowed hard and looked out of her cabin window. The plane had just broken through a clump of clouds and below was an undulating patchwork of reds and greens. It was what she’d been expecting. The ruralness. Yet also different from the image she’d held in her head. The vastness. The intense terracotta colour. The relentless blue of the sky.’ Greta Jellings blushes and bumbles her way through her carefully ordered existence, forever constrained by what her mother would have said and done. No expectation, no disappointment was one of her mother’s mantras. It serves Greta well too. It is the death of her dear friend Walter, and his unusual bequest, that finally forces Greta to escape the shackles of her safe life. Revealed in a series of letters, Walter has set Greta a challenge that leads her across the world, and so far outside her comfort zone, that she has no choice but to confront who she really is. It is in the foreignness of strangers that she finds the familiar, and in the expanse of the vista that she gains perspective. Addressed to Greta is a captivating novel about a woman learning to express her true self. A story about finding the courage to be seen, and a testament to the transformative power of friendship.

If you enjoy a good WWII storyline and you are looking for something a little outside of the mainstream, then ‘We Shall Not Shatter’ by Elaine Stock, is definitely not one to be missed.

The story essentially revolves around one extended Polish family, half Jewish, half Catholic. It charts the outbreak of war and the invasion of their country by first German and then Russian forces.

As the footprint of the story so far (I am still only a little over half way through) is quite small and centres on the town and environs of Brezizny, the sense of time and place is very strong and immersive, and the characters well described.

I’m reading “The Love Book” by Fiona O’Brien and I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it but it’s not what I expected at all. It follows the lives of three girls who meet at boarding school in the 1970s, through to a reunion in their mid 40s (so far, but I’m not halfway through yet, so it may go further). The title and cover image made me think it was going to be a mushy romance but it’s a fascinating look at personal interactions and the way young Irish women respond to their family’s traditions and morals. Set mostly in Dublin although Paris, London and California also play a part.

I am reading the delightful & very dense ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’ by Anthony Doerr!
Set variously in Greece of the Middle Ages, the Ottoman Empire, the USA in pre/post World War 2, a Chinese prison of war camp in N Korea, USA in the 70s, London in the 70s and in outer space about 60 years hence (I think!), it follows the stories of various protagonists, all linked by an ancient text.
I am enjoying it immensely, even though I sometimes have to remind myself who is who!
Sense of place varies, but I would say it is strongest in the Greek chapters.
It is a hardback, about 3″ thick, so rather tiring to read in bed, but also lovely in a sensory way to have a “real” book, rather than my Kindle!
