GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of GOSHAWK SUMMER – NEW FOREST
5th June 2022
Giveaway: 3 copies of Goshawk Summer by James Aldred, set in the New Forest.

In early 2020, wildlife cameraman James Aldred was commissioned to film the lives of a family of Goshawks in the New Forest, his childhood home. He began to plan a treetop hide in a remote site that would allow him to film the Gos nest, the newly hatched chicks and the lives of these elusive and enchanting birds.
Then lockdown. And as the world retreated, something remarkable happened. The noise of our everyday stilled. No more cars, no more off-roaders, no more airplanes roaring in the skies, no one in the Goshawk woods – except James.
At this unique moment, James was granted a once in a lifetime opportunity to keep filming. And so, over Spring and into Summer, he began to record his experiences in a place empty of people but filled with birdsong and new life.

I grew up not far from there and it’s been a constant throughout my adult life.
I love the Dalby Forest
My local park – Witton – in Lancashire – bussing with beauty and nature
Thetford Forest in the UK & the Black Forest in Germany.
I really love the New Forest. My mother in law used to live in Christchurch and we would always take her to Tiptoe which is a very small hamlet within the park. We all loved seeing the pigs foraging acorns and, of course, the wild ponies. I miss visiting now but do enjoy the woods near my own home where Lord Byron used to ride from Newstead Abbey to visit his lady friend Mary Charworth. He galloped along a path called Dog and Bear Lane to her home at Annesley Hall which is sadly now uninhabited.
My favourite forest has to be the Amazon. I was lucky enough to spend 5 weeks in French Guyana and we spent many weekends sleeping in hammocks and listening to/seeing all the wonderful animals and birds.
I’ve just discovered a most gorgeous wood, set between Abbeystead & Dolphinholme in Lancashire. In bluebell season it’s the most beautiful, fairyland-like wood that I’ve ever seen. Completely magical.
Forest of Dean is very Pretty
Vienna Woods in Austria. Huge woodland, great for nature and long walks.
Hackfall Wood at Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire is beautiful and one of my favourites. I love the sound of the woodland birds and the way it changes with the seasons.
My favourite woodland is Wepre Park in North Wales. It’s rich in wildlife and history and even has a waterfall and castle ruins in its grounds.
I tend not to visit woodland very much, but I do love the woodland area at Emmett’s Garden in Kent, at the bluebell season!
I also remember vast woods in Villeneuve Sur Seine, about 50 miles from Paris, where I au-paired as a teenager. I was the au-pair for the dogs & took them for long walks in the woods! We often saw herds of deer…it was magical!
