Lois Evans led a harder life than the other women, constantly on the edge of poverty and forced to endure the media’s classist assertions that her husband Taff, the sole ‘Jack Tar’ in a band of officers, must have been responsible for the party’s downfall. Her story, brought to light through new archival research, is shared here for the first time.
In a gripping and remarkable feat of historical reconstruction, Katherine MacInnes vividly depicts the lives, loves and losses of five women shaped by the unrelenting culture of Empire and forced into the public eye by tragedy. Please do not advertise Snow Widows as fiction. It is non-fiction. I wrote it. I should know. Please send confirmation that you have got this. It is non-fiction written in the style of a novel but it is most certainly NON-FICTION a group biography. The Times reviewer says: ‘She is masterly at combining her profound knowledge of the story … with piercing imagination and empathy. This is imaginative reconstruction rather than fanciful fictionalising’.

Antarctica, because my father was part of the survey crew on the RSS Shackleton in the late 1950’s. It hit icebergs and had to be abandoned close to the Falklands islands.
Switzerland – beautiful with the added benefit of superb chocolate.
I’ve heard that many parts of Canada are wonderful when it’s snowy, so anywhere within that beautiful wilderness!
When thinking of something snow capped it’s always Mount Fuji that comes to mind.

Greenland, was only talking about it yesterday with my young granddaughter, she asked me what I knew about the world’s largest island…I was ashamed to say “next to nothing!”
I can’t imagine having the qualities required to go on expeditions such as this. It would horrible to be left at home with such poor communications, perhaps never knowing exactly what happened if the worst came to the worst. My own ambitions for snowy adventures are confined to more hospitable places and I’d love to explore northern Sweden to see how it contrasts with the south. Hej do!
I’d like to visit the Norwegian fjords
Iceland was my first winter holiday, worrying about being too cold. Nothing to worry about. It started my love of the winter holiday. I’ve been again since, went to Alaska and Oslo and Lofoten Islands in the Arctic. When we were returning home, engine trouble caused us to divert and stay over night in Bodo Norway. It looked beautiful so we want to go there even though the guide book said 360 days of wind a normal year. A bit of happenstance has given us a target to go to somewhere different
Whistler in Canada always looks magical in the snow.
I would like to visit Svalbard, Spitsbergen which is snow covered for eight months of the year and surrounded by blue ice. It would be amazing to see a polar bear in its natural landscape and arctic foxes. There are also glaciers and the population of Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen is just over two thousand inhabitants. A sleigh ride drawn by huskies would be very exciting as would be a visit to the North Pole Expedition Museum. Daytime auroras would be a sight not to miss.
I’d like to visit Patagonia, in particular Ushuaia, a resort town in Argentina located on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the southernmost tip of South America where I have relatives I’d like to visit in their natural snow covered surroundings (for most of the year).
