3 signed copies of Living the Quieter Algarve Dream

Have you ever longed for a quieter life?

Ever wanted to escape the crowds, walk on deserted beaches, and experience all that a different country has to offer?

Alyson and Dave Sheldrake moved to the western Algarve, far away from the tourists, to live in a rural market town. Surrounded by chickens, rabbits, beautiful beaches, and crazy locals, they settled down to enjoy a more peaceful existence.

Their plans didn’t include battling with Portuguese bureaucracy, a life-altering diagnosis, and Kat the dog being rushed to the vets. Brexit, a pandemic, and a house that needed updating ensured that life was anything but tranquil for this creative couple.

In this part guidebook, mostly memoir, find out why the Algarve is a favourite destination for so many, and why this couple have made it their home.

This honest and often hilarious story is the continuation of their Algarve Adventures. It can stand alone as a book for you to enjoy, and is also the follow-up to Living the Dream – in the Algarve, Portugal.

I’d choose the West Coast of Portugal to live each and every time. It’s got everything.

My husband and I moved to Spain, after living in Africa for 31 years. Seeing the necessity to move, I decided my body could not cope with returning to the British weather, and Spain was the obvious choice.
If money were no object, I would still live in Spain but would take the opportunity to visit many of the wonderful places here that my meagre pension cannot accommodate.

I’d love to live in Southern Italy. Preferably Pozzuolli just south of Naples.

What a choice? I guess I would settle for anywhere as there are so many exciting, interesting experiences, and educational
opportunities, where ever one travels in the world. Top of my list would be somewhere in Europe, UK, East Coast of the USA and Canada. “beggars can’t
be choosers” and I would say ‘yes please’ to whatever came my way.

If money were no object, I’d head to Porto, Portugal. I’d have a nice base to see more of Europe including the Algarve, and the size of Porto makes it very walkable. In fact, I’m currently working on getting out of debt so I can move there!

If language was no barrier (my french is limited!) I would love to live in Remoullins in South of France. It is a quiet small town/village in the Garde region. Near to the Unesco site of the Pont du Garde. Half way between Avignon and Nimes. It is so french and I can smell it now. Fresh fruit and bakeries and a regular market. A real dream of a place.

If I had the means I would winter alternating years on Vancouver Island, California and Florida and summer at a cottage in northern Manitoba.

I’d like to live in one of the holiday houses in Porthmadog North Wales near the Festiniog Railway…husband wants to do more volunteering there when he retires and I would be able to go to Wales with him rather than being left at home…And Porthmadog is regularly one of the warmest place in the country and a stones throw from Portmeirion that I love visiting.

I’m quite happy where I am – in London with a lovely garden. If I moved abroad, it would take all the excitement away from going on holiday somewhere exotic.

I think I could be quite happy living anywhere in Italy. I would probably prefer a smaller town on the outskirts of a larger town, so I could take a train or bus in for the larger city offerings.

I live in North Wales and I feel very much at home here. However, my village has grown considerably in recent years and it’s not as quiet as it used to be.

I love village life rather than totally remote but with woodlands, mountains and streams nearby!
It has to be North Wales!

I’m happy enough in our West Sussex village. Lucky to have travelled quite a bit when I was younger & enjoyed many holidays, but really can’t think of anywhere I’d rather live.

Somewhere in New Zealand as that’s where my gg-grandfather emigrated to in the 1850s, possibly Auckland.
