Death in the East is the 4th great book in the Sam Wyndham murder mystery series and can be read as a stand alone.
Calcutta police detective Captain Sam Wyndham and his quick-witted Indian Sergeant, Surrender-not Banerjee, are back for another rip-roaring adventure set in 1920s India.
1905, London. As a young constable, Sam Wyndham is on his usual East London beat when he comes across an old flame, Bessie Drummond, attacked in the streets. 1922, India. Leaving Calcutta, Captain Sam Wyndham heads for the hills of Assam, to the ashram of a sainted monk where he hopes to conquer his opium addiction. But when he arrives, he sees a ghost from his life in London – a man thought to be long dead, a man Wyndham hoped he would never see again.
Wyndham knows he must call his friend and colleague Sergeant Banerjee for help. He is certain this figure from his past isn’t here by coincidence. He is here for revenge . . .

I think it must be simple tarka dahl – I can enjoy it simply served with rice or breads, and no curry feast is complete without it. I think it comes from several years of living among Gurkha families who will happily eat “dahl bhat” (dhal and rice) for every meal.
Samosas. My Dad worked in India in the 1970s and used to cook Indian food at home, when it was considered very exotic (seems so ridiculous now). Samosas were his favourite, especially with peas inside and lots of spices.
My favourite Indian dish is traditional lamb curry.

Definitely Rogan Josh but with the traditional lamb replaced by chicken! With poppadoms and naan bread too!

I love coconut prawn curry with coconut rice from Kerala!
I had that for my 26th birthday at a little shack restaurant on the beach at Cochin!
Used to love chicken madras but now it’s a korma.

My favourite Indian dish is palak paneer, or spinach with cheese.
My local Indian has a dish called Sayed Special, a delicious hot curry with all the meats.
This sounds a fabulous book and would love to read.
My all time favourite dish (although I do love all Indian food) is King Prawn Pathia with spicy chips, onion pilau rice and garlic naan! Making me hungry just thinking about it!
