2010 – Carrie and Johan have literally just got married on a small island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand but that evening, as they are celebrating, Johan is targeted by a swat team of armed men and is taken away in a van. He has disappeared.
Moving on several years, Carrie is now married to Robin and they live in Devon on the edge of Dartmoor. Together they have twins, born prematurely, and given the little boy has recurring health problems since birth, Carrie decided to give up work as a top surgeon in order to devote herself to the children; but now Robin has lost his job and she feels it is time to pick up the tools of her trade once again. Coming up is a period of retraining and acclimatisation and she is choosing to take her first steps under the tutelage of her old colleague, who is currently working in Stockholm. It is also the annual “Roof” conference for people letting their properties on the app, so that would be a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Coincidentally, that is Johan’s country of birth and it is clear that the abysmal ending that Carrie and Johan had still remains unresolved. Carrie was let down, contact peremptorily cut, and she has always wondered what really happened, there are so many unanswered questions. But surely she has moved on by now?
The story explores the past and the present with dexterity and aplomb. It is a gripping mystery and Carrie, as the central character, is beautifully crafted, straddling her high power career with the vagaries of motherhood. The sense of pathos is well maintained and everything hangs very well together. I felt the main explanation towards the end perhaps left me a little non-plussed, it felt a touch fantastical, but the emotional integrity nevertheless continued to hold me in thrall. There are interesting elements that take the reader into the world of surgery, which all felt plausible but surprisingly at the end, the author divulges that she relied on professionals to keep her straight, as she has no surgical skills – that was a real surprise to the layperson!
The author also has a real talent for bringing her chosen settings life, observing small details, colour and specifics of the various places that feature in the novel.
The audiobook is very well narrated by Emilia Fox.
This will be a popular read in Summer 2026. I was really hooked and couldn’t wait to resume listening.
