A dark thriller set mainly in GLASGOW
RomCom set in Paris

Uncoupling by Lorraine Brown, RomCom set in Paris.
I spent today – Valentine’s Day – reading Uncoupling, and it was a very nice way to ‘travel’ to Paris. I seem to be spending a lot of time there, even though it is lockdown, as I have really been enjoying “Call My Agent’ on Netflix which is also a wonderful way to spend a few hours in the city, with a bunch of eclectic people!
Hannah and Si are an item. They are just leaving Santa Lucia Station in Venice to take the night sleeper to Amsterdam, where they are are due to attend his sister’s wedding. Their couchette is already taken and rather than argue the point, they find a couple of seats to while away the night. Si is soon asleep and Hannah cannot settle with the noise around her and moves on to a quieter carriage and falls asleep, even thought a fellow passenger is, annoyingly, playing scratchy music through his headphones.
Trains in Europe often split along the way, so you can well imagine what happens. Si continues to Amsterdam, Hannah awakes as the train is pulling into Paris. She has neither money, nor clothes (they are all with Si) and she soon has her phone pick-pocketed. Léo, who was plugged into his music – irritatingly and loudly – in the same compartment, is soon encouraging her to take in the sights of the city, whilst the two of them wait to catch the afternoon train. After all, how else is she going to the spend the time whilst she waits for the next train to Amsterdam?
And thus she explores the city. The author revels in placing her characters against iconic backdrops, exploring little known squares and climbing the hill in Montmartre to visit the Sacré-Coeur. This is truly what literary tourism is all about! And whilst Hannah is out and about, she gives thought to her relationship with Si, with a growing unease that there is something he is not telling her.
This a terrific debut, with likeable (for the most part!) characters and a storyline that flows along. Recommended for anyone who loves Paris and a bit of romance!
