The Cheltenham Literature Festival is normally one of the highlights of the literary year. And this year’s Festival promises to be no exception… Around 1,000 speakers (many of them authors) will take part in 550 different events.

And, crucial for TripFiction readers, many of the authors will talk about books that are very strong on location. Festival goers should be inspired by the adventurous spirit of renowned mountaineer Chris Bonington. Sarah Outen will talk about her latest challenge around the Northern Hemisphere. We will hear from explorer Alastair Sawday and motorcycle adventurer Charley BoormanJamie McDonald who overcame a rare spinal condition to run 200 marathons back-to-back will discuss his book. Author Lois Pryce, who motor-biked solo around Iran, will talk about her experiences travelling solo. Wanderlust’s Phoebe Smith and Microadventures author Alastair Humphreys offer practical tips on crafting your own modern and manageable adventures. Broadcaster Michael Portillo will recount the Great American Railway Journeys and author Simon Jenkins tells the stories behind the under-sung British Railway Stations. A pretty eclectic collection for everyone!

It can, of course, be hard to find your way around a festival as large as Cheltenham. We have obtained an advance copy of the Festival Programme and it can be accessed here. As well as the literary side, you will see that there are also a fair number of gastronomic delights on offer. There will be a global eating adventures from Peru to Spain, Pakistan to Mexico, with Nadiya Hussain, Thomasina Miers, Jose Pizarro, Martin Morales, Sumayya Usmani and rising star Lopè Ariyo, who will present a mouth-watering evening celebrating the best of Nigerian cuisine and culture.

It really should be a great week for everyone who can attend. Definitely worth the effort if you can make it…
