Sonia flees to Nepal intrigued by her family’s connections with the subcontinent but it isn’t so easy to escape from herself. She does though find a nurturing community with a deep and admirable spirituality and begins to be able to face problems that had overwhelmed her in England. Her handsome guide Rekraj and her kindly hostess Guliya are puzzled by their western guest who seems unhinged at times and acts strangely and sometimes hilariously. Guliya’s teenage daughter befriends Sonia and the two women go on a pilgrimage into the mountains where Sonia confronts more dangers than she ever imagined. Told from five points of view and voices that weave together a rich tapestry of ancient culture and compassion, this story deftly draws one into minds with very different perspectives.
Nature in all her glory and power is another character in this story and she herself is transformative. The river that flows through the story guides Sonia’s journey of rediscovery, reinvention and healing while showing her that she doesn’t need to accept the blank life she had seen as her destiny.
