Era(s): 1827-1829
Samuel Carr leaves Cheshire in 1827, a young man eager for adventure but full of apprehension, why is he leaving the safety of his yeoman farmhouse? Unable to accept advice from a fellow passenger on the sailing ship he leaves her in Gibraltar to travel down the Greek Peloponnese (by now thankfully travelling in the company of Greek patriots). They stumble on the Battle of Navarino and what they witness does nothing to allay Samuel’s fear. Wounded in the leg at Methoni his friends send him to the relative safety of the Mani, where he remains in Kardamyli and Limeni, unaware that Susannah is desperately seeking him from her base in Koroni. Their separate adventures and their lives together keep them in the Southern Peloponnese until unfortunate events take the narrative to the new capital of independent Greece, Nafplio.
