Psychological thriller set in Berlin
GIVEAWAY – 3 copies of Loving Modigliani set in PARIS – Montparnasse (EU/UK)
4th April 2021
We are delighted to offer 3 copies of “Loving Modigliani” by Linda Lappin, set mainly in Montparnasse across the 20th Century.
Linda Lappin’s new novel examines the real and imagined aftermaths of the 1920 death of the artist Jeanne Hébuterne, lover and wife of the painter, Amadeo Modigliani. An artist in her own right, Hébuterne died in a fall from a window two days after Modigliani’s own demise from tuberculosis.
In Loving Modigliani (Serving House Books, 2020), Lappin shadows Hébuterne’s ghost through the afterlife and takes readers through the darker corners of the European art world on a posthumous hunt by the living for her missing artwork.
“Rich, multi-layered and engrossing…”

I would have liked to have met my 3 x great grandfather Edward Broadbent, he was a canal boatman. One day I typed his name into Google and what a story I did find. He was a right rogue and a vagabond and in 1845, he was sent to The House of Correction for a month, for having aboard his canal boat an illegal funnel. He was drinking the wines, spirits and alcohol that he was carrying and topping the barrels up with canal water. His catastrophic death also appears on Google in the Northampton papers, as he suffocated on Friday 6th September 1861, taking a boat through a tunnel in Blisworth, after being overcome by smoke from the furnace that was being stoked, he then fell off the back of the boat and drowned, his 7th baby being born on the Monday, a couple of days before his death. So there are so many questions that I would like to ask him. I have been on a canal boat, in the tunnel where he died.

I’d love to meet the ghost of my Grandma who my parents and I lived with (due to post-war housing shortage) until I was 6. She gave me so much. Her strong feisty genes and a lifelong passion for books after teaching me to read using Noddy books bought at a jumble sale (money was so tight) before I started school. She died when I was 10 before I realised what a hard and extraordinary life she had led. Now collating a family history I have so many unanswered questions to ask her
With all the Royal news at present it will have to be Queen Victoria
The ghost I would most like to talk to is my Granny. There are so many questions I would like to ask. Some family matters have come to light recently that I would really like to ask her about
Ebenezer scrooge ! Some days i feel like the world needs to remember what is important !!
I would love to meet my mum she died in 1976 when I was 12. I never really got to know her. Every now and then a aunt or uncle will say “I remember when your mum and I”…..
I’d love to know more about her to talk to her as an adult not as a child.
Samuel Pepys , lived through some amazing times in England and I would love to see life through his eyes.
Elizabeth I would be so interesting 🙂
Keith Floyd. We would have a riot.
My great great grandma. She was said to be psychic and clairvoyant, and I find it fascinating.
Elvis or MLK
I’d like to meet Marilyn Monroe and get all the gossip about her love life and the Kennedys
Henry VIII, as i love the tudor era
Elizabeth 1 – fascinated by her!
I would like to meet Queen Victoria
I would like to meet Mary Queen of Scots who was held captive at Tutbury Castle in the village I live and her ghost is supposed to haunt the castle.
I would like to meet Robert Burns
I would like to meet Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria. I would have so many questions for her.
Barbara Hepworth to discover more about her pioneering design and inspiration.
I would love to meet Anne Boleyn, I have so many questions to ask her!
I’ll go with the French theme and say Coco Chanel. To hear what life was like as a working woman and hope a smidge of her style rubs off on me.
I would like to meet my Nan and Grandad again. There are so many questions I would have liked to have asked them.
Queen Victoria – a powerful lady with hodden depth – would be magical
I would love to meet Anne Boleyn. I live in Greenwich and often walk past a tree in the park that apparently was there when Henry VIII was courting her. Rumour has it he used to chase her round the tree
I’d get the real story from her ! 🙂
My obvious choice would be to meet my mother who died when I was 10 – I’d like to know her as an adult. But in terms of famous people I think Robin Williams would be an interesting choice – hilariously funny, incredibly talented but with hidden layers.
Hello, I would like to meet Queen Victoria. I’ve always found her really interesting and I would like to find out more about her life.
I think meeting Henry VIII would be rather interesting
My husband’s family on the maternal side, has quite a chequered past, which I would like to know more about, over and above the information which can be found in the history books and from family tree search.
One of his ancestors, James Ings, took part in the Cato Street Conspiracy in 1820, which was a plot to overthrow and murder the then government of the day.
They were captured and arrested just in time, and for his part in the plot, James Ings was hung at Newgate Prison.
I would love to have met him during his short incarceration, just to find out what had motivated him to join the conspirators!

Thanks for the competition entry 🙂
My ghost would be close to home. After the death of my father I found out (on the Eve of his funeral) that my mother had had another life unknown to either my brother or myself. So many questions to ask and no-one to ask.

Oh my goodness, not only did you have the death of your father to contend with but secrets in the family…. that must have taken a lot of courage to deal with!
From the past….I would like to visit both my Irish paternal great grandmother and my English maternal great grandmother to learn more
about their lives in the era in which they lived.
I would love to meet any of my grandparents – sadly they all died when my parents were young so I never knew any of them.
Joan of Arc has always fascinated me.
