GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of The Island of Forgetting – BARBADOS
10th July 2022
We are pleased to be able to offer 3 copies of The Island of Forgetting by Jasmine Sealy, set on Barbados.
UK only
In this compelling debut, an unknowable legacy passes through generations of one family living on the beautiful island of Barbados.
There is Iapetus, a lonely soul haunted by the memory of his father; his son Atlas, dreaming of a life far removed from his reality; Atlas’s daughter Calypso, struggling to find her place in an unforgiving society; and her son Nautilus, grappling with various parts of a complex identity.
Each of them longs to escape – to go beyond the borders and circumstances that have contained them for so long – but each finds that they are trapped by a history found only in whispers and half-remembered fragments; and that it is dictating a future over which they have little control.
With every passing decade another generation must contend with the same doubts about their identity, about their place in the small world they have carved out for themselves and the same question: how can the things we don’t know define our futures?
Perfect for fans of Girl, Woman, Other and Homegoing, THE ISLAND OF FORGETTING is a powerful story of family and hope, and marks the arrival of a stunning new voice in literary fiction.

Although I’ve lived in the Outer Hebrides, I’ve never visited the island of Barra, and I would love to. Not by ferry, that’s far too ordinary. By plane, and the flight times are determined by tide tables because the plane lands on the beach.
I’d love to visit Árainn Mhór Island off the coast of County Donegal. I enjoyed The Storm Keeper’s Island which was set there.

Reunion, off the east coast of Africa. At university, my husband and I were close friends with a student from Reunion who was on an exchange program. He was going out with a girl a couple of years below us and for a while we were all really close. A couple of years after graduating, she moved to Reunion with him and they had a family, although they aren’t together as a couple now. I’ve always fancied visiting, as their children were brought up in such a different location to our own. It feels like our lives crossed and were on the same path for a while and then took such different trajectories.

It was a calm backwater, where the Malays, Chinese, Indians and local tribes lived in apparent harmony.
I know there have been many changes in the intervening 40 years, such as high rise buildings & the impact that the internet has had on tribes who, back then, were still living their lives in longhouses, hunting with blowpipes, fishing & planting subsistence crops of wild rice & sago palm.
It would be so interesting to see all the changes & whether anything has stayed the same!

The Isle of Wight because I’d be going with my mum and she wouldn’t want to fly. Also it looked lovely on The Hotel Inspector the other night and neither of us have been there.
