Novel set on Korčula Island, CROATIA
23rd September 2022
The Olive Grove by Eva Glyn, novel set on Korčula Island, Croatia.
Antonia is seeing her boss, a married man, and they both work together at Mediterranean Gems in Sussex, an agency that sources and then rents out beautiful villas in and around the Mediterranean. It’s not really an ideal set up for her and on a whim, she applies for the job as housekeeper at Vila Maslina on Korčula, run by Damir. She leaves behind her daughter, Honey, and her partner and this is probably the most spontaneous thing she has ever done in her life.
One of the highlights for guests staying at the property is being tutored by a world renowned sculptor, Vincenzo, which makes the beautiful villa an attractive place to stay. Antonia has soon eased her way into life on the island and relishes her occupation whilst getting to know both Damir and Vincenzo.
As ever, with this part of the world, the legacy of the recent brutal war is not far away and she discovers Damir suffered huge trauma and loss during the war in the early 1990s, something he can hardly speak about, but the legacy dogs both his waking and sleeping hours and it runs deep.
This is the uplifting story of how one woman can start to find her emotional feet in the world while carving a new future for herself in a new country.
The island is a catamaran hop away from Dubrovnik and the author colourfully captures the growing heat of the summer months on the island. The food wafts off the pages and there is a good sense of history to round off the story.
