I Did It For You by Amy Engel, slow burning thriller set in Kansas.
#audiobook narrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins, Amanda Stribling and Jennifer Pickens
Greer is now living in Chicago, still emotionally engulfed by the shooting of her sister, Eliza, and of her boyfriend 14 years ago. A killer was securely convicted and executed but now there is – what seems to be – a copycat killing and Greer is lured back to Ludlow, where the murder happened and where her parents still live.
Her parents have, of course, been knocked sideways and continue to struggle with their lives; her father finds solace in alcohol, so the prospect of once again living under their roof is daunting, but the drive to find out more about the latest killings is her priority. She has always had a sense that the full story surrounding Eliza’s death was never fully probed, something about the murders left her feeling unsettled, still to this day.
Her two friends are delighted – and surprised – by her return but they regroup, reminisce and re-bond immediately. She also teams up with a very unexpected member of the community to re-evaluate the investigation and try and find further clues about what really went happened. The murderer of her sister is dead, that is indisputable, but a clue surfaces, linking the deaths 14 years ago to those that have recently been committed, and just serves to confirm her deep unease about the two sets of killings.
The novel is astute on the feelings of loss and bereavement, it explores the ripple effects of murder within a community, and how the after-effects ripple out onto individuals involved, both close and further removed.
The setting is beautifully evoked, with a languorous and tangible small town vibe. It can be a slow burner, ponderous at times but overall this is a richly unfolding mystery – thriller, perhaps not so much – that moves along at a regular pace and proves to be an engaging read. (I learned, too, that tinned cheese is a thing 😬)
