Out Of Her Depth by Lizzy Barber

There are summers that could change your life.
There are summers that could end it.

Meet Rachel.
An unassuming young woman from a quiet London suburb.

Picture the scene:
A summer job at the beautiful Villa Medici in the Tuscan hills.
A group of glamorous teenagers, used to a life of privilege.
Lavish parties, heady sun-soaked days, backstabbing and bedhopping.

Until someone goes too far.
And nothing will ever be the same.

I am enchanted by the beauty and romance of architecture as well as scenery. Bruges stole my heart when I visited a few yers ago. I hope to return to explore it more one day soon. Austria and Switzerland are also beautiful with unique architecture and lots of red geraniums in summer. Delightful!

Tuscany has some great small(ish) towns which are well worth visiting in addition to Florence and Siena. Lucca, Arezzo and Cortona are particularly lovely and often less touristy. I haven’t yet been to the Tuscan coast so am hoping to get there soon.

I’ve never been to Tuscany but would love to visit the vineyards and olive groves especially- I’m more into scenic views than the art and history of cities and towns these days. In terms of the most romantic place, I’m not sure I’ve been anywhere overly romantic. I’ve been to Paris but perhaps I was doing it wrong!! But I do love a romantic sunset stroll along a beach or early morning alongside a Scottish loch…

Many think of Viareggio as a seaside town in Tuscany renowned for its carnival. There is, however, so much more to this beautiful place for those who want to explore other than just sea and sand, such as its musical and archaeological museums. The Torre Del Lago and Villa Puccini is a lovely romantic area to visit : set in beautiful lakeside surroundings, and a boat trip on the lake makes for a relaxing and scenic experience. Here you have it all, romance, beauty, culture, sun and sea, and discovery.

San Gimignano is a beautiful unspoilt mediaeval hill top town in Tuscany where time stands still and there are still lute and harp players in the narrow streets. There are lots of towers and the Piazza Della Cisterna dates back to 1287, being an underground cistern. This is a romantic place to visit and is not far from Florence with all its art. The most romantic place for me though, is the Island of Giglio, which has turquoise blue sea, pristine beaches and is part of the Tuscan National Park. There are hidden coves and lots of wildlife, wonderful for a romantic holiday for two far from the maddening crowds.

There are so many beautiful romanic places in the world I would love to visit so many. I do but through reading and going on adventures there as I am unable to travel due to poor health. Tuscany sounds and looks amazing. One of the most amazing things to happen to me was a surprise mini break to Jersey where my boyfriend 21 proposed to me (I was only 17) at Mont Orgueil castle at night when it was lit up. It was beautiful. Would love to be lucky and win a copy please many thanks.

Being a bit of a stranger to romance myself, I would have to choose a romantic film I have seen instead & that would have to be Love Story. A group of friends and I went to see it, aged about 13, & we all sat sobbing our hearts out!
I much prefer holidays by the sea to inland, so if I were holidaying in Tuscany, I would do lots of day trips to the coast!
    This book sounds very intriguing!

I did a cookery course in Tuscany about 20 years ago, it was brilliant. My top tip is when visiting any of the touristy towns and cities, move away from the main streets and explore the back streets and alleyways, where you’ll find glorious unexpected views peeking between the houses, beautiful window boxes and hanging baskets, and little cafes and bars charging a fraction of the tourist prices
