Atticus Arnott’s Great Adventure by Caroline James, novel set mainly on the Costa Blanca.
Atticus has lost his mojo after the death of his wife, Clara. His son Mungo continues to run the sheep farm in Cumbria but Atticus is moping, he used to be so active but now resorts to dog walking and dominoes. Mungo’s twin sister descends for the Summer break with her four children from Ireland and is determined to take things in hand. The siblings, however, have very different views on how their father should negotiate his future.
The re-discovery of their ancient 1985 VW Westfalia 1.9L camper van, which served the family very well back in the day, leads from one thing to another and soon Atticus is sallying forth in “Winnie”, the affectionate name given to the vehicle and alongside him in the cabin is his faithful dog, Ness. From Portsmouth via San Sabastián the first stop is Burgos and already he has spotted one of the c.92 large, silhouetted Osborne bulls that dot the Spanish landscape – they are either 14M or 7M high and were originally devised as an advertising campaign for Brandy de Jerez. Now they are a national symbol. He masters the BipandGo like a pro and flies through the toll collection points.
Then it’s on to South of Alicante and he rests up in Solma Vacaciones Camp Site, where he finds all kinds of people who are friendly, taking him under their wing. Atticus gradually finds his feet and there might even be a little romance in the air….
He may be stuck in his ways but his instagram account @thetravellinggranddad is garnering a huge following as he charts his days and his blossoming life in Spain.
Back in Ireland a very different story is brewing for Mary and as Christmas starts to loom, decisions need to be taken across the board.
A heart-warming story with real life drama, poignancy and delightfully told.
